With the weather beginning to warm we cannot help but enjoy all things spring at Golden Hill! To celebrate the spring season, Tim Healy and Mike Hoyt’s second grade students planned and executed a farmers market that was held in Golden Hill’s very own courtyard. From proposing their plans to the school principal for approval, to creating signage advertising the items, these students hosted an exceptional market filled with beautiful and fresh spring produce! 

Produce was donated from S.&S.O. Produce Farms and students could choose items to take home free of charge. Using the produce items, the second graders practiced taking measurements and using line plots, concepts that are key in math and art. Other grades who visited used the market as inspiration for their own activities with math specialist Cayla Plot. 


 

“None of this happens without [S.&S.O.’s] support!” shared Healy. “I think ties between school and community need to be a core value of what we do.”

Second grader Stella Cuomo was on the planning team. Her team’s goal was to find the best time to host the farmers market so as many students as possible could come and enjoy all of its offerings.



 

“My favorite part of second grade was planning this!” said Cuomo. 

Giuliana Casino, whose birthday happened to fall on the same day as the market, shared that she was having such a fun day being outside and suggesting items to her peers. 

“My favorite thing we have are the beets,” shared Casino. “My dad can make them so good with seasoning in the oven. They get yummy and crispy.”

Casino’s role in planning the farmer’s market was integral, as she was responsible for creating signage that pictured the produce item, a price per pound that was consistent with the price of that item if shopping at local stores, and some fun facts about the item. 

“Sweet potatoes can be sweet or spicy when you eat them,” Casino said. “There’s lots of ways to eat them. And they’re healthy for you!”


The farmers market was a one-day event on Tuesday, May 20. Students had a great time and hope it can become an annual event at Golden Hill.
