September Superintendent’s Corner

Dear Florida Union Free School District Community Members,

I find it difficult to believe we are making our last preparations for school to begin. The summer break was a great time to stop, take time to review and make plans for the future.  As we look ahead to the 2017-18 school year we have several exciting initiatives to share with you.

One of our goals is to have open communication with the community and families about the district. With that goal in mind, we have launched a new website at The website is easier to navigate, has a large calendar section and has current district news on the front page.  In addition, we will be launching an app this fall which will make accessing and receiving updates easier. The principals and I will continue our regularly scheduled informational/discussion sessions throughout the year.

Another goal is to provide rigorous learning opportunities, athletic teams and extracurricular programming to engage and challenge students. This year we have added college level Spanish and continue to offer online classes.  Starting this fall we have added modified girls volleyball, football at all levels and swimming. Football and swimming are offered through an athletic merger with Warwick Valley Central School.

As a district we made a commitment to expand our use of educational technology to increase academic engagement and to prepare our students for college and careers. We will be increasing our access to technology in the middle and high school levels. Currently our elementary school has a tablet or Chromebook for each student in the classroom. That model will be continued in the middle and high schools. We expect to be assigning a Chromebook to each student by mid year. There will be many opportunities for parents and students to learn more about this initiative once school opens.

We are excited to have students back in the buildings on Wednesday, Sept. 6 and look forward to the new school year.
