Graduation Requirements

NYS REGENTS EXAMINATION UPDATE FOR 2019-20

The State Education Department announced the cancellation of the June  2020 administration of Regents exams and released guidance on modifications to requirements for students to graduate and earn their high school diplomas, credentials and endorsements.

These modifications apply to currently enrolled students in grades 8-12 who were intending to participate in one or more of the June 2020 Regents examinations.

Below are some of the most common scenarios students may encounter.  To find out which applies to you/your student, please answer the questions (marked as Q.) and note the corresponding “no” or “yes” questions and outcomes.

Scenario 1

Q. Are you currently enrolled in a course ending in a Regents examination?
No? If your answer is NO, scenario #1 doesn’t apply to you. Check other scenarios.
Yes? If your answer is YES,
Q. Is your final grade in the course 65 or over?
No? If your answer is NO, you will not receive credit for this Regents.
Yes? If your answer is YES, you will be exempted from this Regents.

SCENARIO 2

Q. Have you passed a class that ended in a Regents exam but were NOT successful in passing that Regents exam?
No? If your answer is NO, scenario #2 doesn’t apply to you. Check other scenarios.
Yes? If your answer is YES,

  • Q. Did you let your counselor know you intended on taking the Regents in June 2020 or
  • Q. Were you receiving academic intervention, supplemental instruction, or tutoring of some kind in preparation to the the exam or
  • Q. Did you take the exam in June 2019, August 2019, or January 2020 in an attempt to pass the course or better your score?

No? If your answer to all three questions is NO, you will not receive credit for this Regents.
Yes? If you answered YES to any of the three questions, you will be exempted from this Regents.

SCENARIO 3

Q. Did/will you fail a regents level course in June 2020?
No? If your answer is NO, scenario #3 doesn’t apply to you. Check scenario #4.
Yes? If your answer is YES…
Q. Did you registered for Summer School 2020 AND receive a passing score of 65 or higher for that course?
No? If your answer is NO, you will not receive credit for this Regents.
Yes? If your answer is YES, you will be exempted from this Regents.

SCENARIO 4

Q. Are you currently enrolled in a credit recovery course?
No? If your answer is NO, scenario #4 doesn’t apply to you.
Yes? If your answer is YES,
Q.  Will you have a passing final grade in the course of 65 or greater?
No? If your answer is NO, you will not receive credit for this Regents.
Yes?  If your answer is YES,

Are you signed up to take the Regents exam in June 2020?
No? If your answer is NO, you will not receive credit for this Regents.
Yes? If your answer is YES, you will be exempted from this Regents.

(a) Students may meet the learning standards in technology either through a course in technology education or through an integrated course combining technology with mathematics. A commencement-level course in technology education may be used as the third unit of credit in science or mathematics, but not both.

(b) To earn the advanced designation, the student must complete one of the following:

  1. A language other than English (total of 3 credits)
  2. Career and technology education (5 credits), plus one credit in a foreign language.
  3. The Arts (5 credits), plus one credit in foreign language.

(c) The Arts include dance, music, theater and visual arts.(d) Only those students completing a sequence of not less than 5 units of credit in career and technology education or the arts may substitute another 3-unit sequence in place of the 3 units in a foreign language.
