In-person instruction returns Jan. 19

Dear Florida Union Free School District,

Happy New Year! We are very excited to have students return for in-person instruction on Tuesday, Jan. 19. This letter contains important information related to in-person instruction, selection for the third instructional period, request for transportation changes, school meals, out of district programs and the COVID-19 school testing plan. A section at the end of the letter has a summary of important dates.

In-person Instruction Resumes: In-person instruction resumes on Tuesday, Jan. 19. The District is currently in the second instructional period. Students who were attending in-person instruction before the Thanksgiving break will be allowed to resume in-person instruction. If you selected remote instruction during the second instructional period, then your children will remain remote.

Third Instructional Period Selection Deadline: Any parents wishing to change the instructional selection for the third instructional period are asked to notify the building principals by email by Tuesday, Jan. 19. If there are no changes to the selection, no action is necessary.

Transportation Requests for Third Instructional Period Deadline: Any requests for transportation changes for the third instructional period must be submitted by email to the building principals by Tuesday, Jan. 19.

Third Instructional Period: On Monday, Jan. 25, the District will begin the third instructional period.

School Meals: Next week, school meal pick up will be Tuesday, Jan. 19, Wednesday, Jan. 20, and Friday, Jan. 22 from 9-9:30 a.m. at S.S. Seward Institute. Beginning Jan. 19, school meal delivery will not be offered.

Out of District Program: Students who attend out-of-district placements will follow the schedule of the program they attend.

COVID-19 Testing Plan: Governor Cuomo has instituted a Cluster Action Initiative based on many metrics including positivity rate. If an area is designated in a yellow, orange or red zone, schools within the zone will be required to implement COVID-19 testing to remain open for in-person instruction. If a school is in an orange or yellow zone, 20% of in-person students, faculty and staff must be tested. If a school is located in a red zone, then 30% of in-person students, faculty and staff must be tested. If the District is designated in a zone, detailed information will be sent and on-site COVID-19 testing procedures will be put into place. Again — at this time, the District has not been designated in a zone. General information about the Cluster Action Initiative from Gov. Cuomo is on the District website.

Health Office: Please contact the health offices to report illness and ask any questions related to the health protocols.

Communications: The District will continue notifying the school community of positive cases.

Now more than ever, we must remain vigilant in stopping the spread of COVID-19. The District continues to sanitize and disinfect, MERV-11 filters were installed in ventilation systems throughout the buildings, windows will continue to be kept open for fresh air, masks are required at all times except for mask breaks, social distancing is practiced and congregation of individuals is discouraged. It will take all of us working together following the protocols to prevent the spread of illness.
