District instruction will go fully remote Nov. 30-Dec. 11; Jan. 4-15

Dear Florida Union Free School District Community:

As you are aware, the COVID-19 positivity rate in the area is surging. The steady, substantial increase in positive cases across Orange County is comparable or possibly exceeding rates experienced last spring at the beginning of the pandemic, according to the Orange County Department of Health (OCDOH).

After consulting with the OCDOH, the Florida Union Free School District will pause in-person instruction following the two upcoming holiday breaks.  The District will provide remote instruction only from November 30 through December 11.  If health conditions allow, the District will resume in-person instruction from December 14-December 23.  After the Winter Recess, the District will again pause in-person instruction from January 4-15.  If health conditions allow, in-person instruction will resume on January 19.

We have been fortunate to have offered in-person instruction to students for the past three months. Our nurses have done a phenomenal job in educating everyone in the buildings about the precautions needed to stay safe and they have performed diligent contact tracing when cases of COVID-19 have entered the buildings. The custodial staff has sanitized and disinfected the buildings constantly. Faculty and staff have been extraordinary in supporting the educational program and keeping our students on task in these difficult circumstances.  Parents have let us know when their children aren’t well and have cooperated with our nurses and students have followed all protocols.

However, with the current rise in cases, we believe it prudent to follow the recommendations of OCDOH and take a two-week pause of in-person instruction after each holiday break. Since the instructional model is synchronous, the school schedules will remain the same while all students learn remotely during the pause period. The buildings will remain open and faculty and staff will remain responsive to your students’ needs. We are fully prepared for this scenario.

Here is the schedule for the coming weeks:

  • November 23-24: In-person instruction
  • November 25: Half-day in-person instruction
          S.S. Seward dismissal: 10:30
    Golden Hill dismissal: 11:30
  • November 26-27: District closed for Thanksgiving Recess
  • November 30-December 11: Full remote schedule
  • December 14-22:  In-person instruction
  • December 23: Half-day in-person instruction
    S.S. Seward dismissal: 10:30
    Golden Hill dismissal: 11:30
  • December 24-January 1: Schools closed for Winter Recess
  • January 4-15: Full remote schedule
  • January 18: District closed in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • January 19: In-person instruction

The District will continue to gather and evaluate information from the OCDOH. We are committed to having students back in the buildings to learn as soon as feasible. Making this decision now gives families time to make the necessary accommodations for this change. We have arranged a special virtual meeting on Monday, November 23 at 7:00 to review this information.

If you have specific questions, please contact your child’s building principal and/or teacher.

These have been extremely stressful times for everyone, especially for families dealing with illness, quarantine, and hardship. We want to thank you for your continued support and cooperation as we deal with COVID-19 and all the unknowns that come with it.

This is traditionally a time for families to get together and be thankful. Although gatherings won’t be the same as they have been in previous years due to the pandemic, I wish you a healthy and happy Thanksgiving.

Jan Jehring, Superintendent of Schools
