Dear Florida Union Free School District Community,
Here are several updates for your information.
Positive Cases: We had two positive COVID-19 cases in the District this week. A student of an out-of-district program tested positive. There were no proximate or direct contacts in the District. The second positive case involved an employee at Seward.
Out of District Special Education Programs: From Dec. 14-Jan. 15, students who attend out-of-district programs will follow the schedules determined by the programs. Please contact Jeanne-Marie Pavlik at email@example.com if you have any questions.
Career and Technical Education Programs: Students who attend a career and technical program at Orange-Ulster BOCES will follow the S.S. Seward schedule. For example, if S.S. Seward is open for in-person instruction, students will be transported to career and technical programs. If S.S. Seward is remote, then students will participate in career and technical education remotely.
Letter from Dr. Gelman, Orange County Department of Health: I have attached the letter we received from Dr. Gelman which summarizes information related to Orange County. Based on the surging COVID-19 cases in the region, we followed the recommendation to pause in-person instruction after the holiday breaks. Although we have had several cases since Thanksgiving and several employees have been exposed and quarantined, based on the data, it appears that the transition to remote learning prevented over 125 students and several employees from being exposed and quarantined during this period. We are hopeful that the surge in Orange County will decrease after the Winter Recess and we will resume in-person instruction on Jan. 19.
COVID-19 Testing in Schools: We are actively developing a plan for COVID-19 testing in schools in the event Florida UFSD falls in a state designated zone and testing is required. We will continue to provide information to the school community as the details of the plan are developed.
Village of Florida Notice: Please see attached letter from the Village of Florida regarding important information about your drinking water.
On behalf of the district, I want to reiterate that we will continue to monitor the infection rates and we are committed to resume in-person instruction on Tuesday, January 19.
